Celebrating World Sea Turtle Day at Mawil Sea Turtle Sanctuary

Every year, World Sea Turtle Day reminds us of the importance of protecting one of the ocean's most iconic and ancient marine species. This year, Mawil Sea Turtle Sanctuary in West Sumbawa invites communities, students, travelers, conservationists, and nature lovers to join a special celebration dedicated to sea turtle conservation and coastal stewardship.

Mawil Beach is one of the most important sea turtle nesting habitats in the region. Throughout the year, mother turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on the beach, continuing a natural cycle that has existed for millions of years. The sanctuary is committed to protecting these nesting turtles through a natural conservation approach, allowing eggs to hatch in their original nests and enabling hatchlings to make their first journey to the sea naturally.

To commemorate World Sea Turtle Day, participants will take part in a series of meaningful conservation activities. The main agenda includes a beach clean-up focused on removing driftwood that can obstruct nesting turtles and hatchlings, plastic waste, fishing debris, and turtle data monitoring. Visitors will also learn about the importance of natural nesting conservation, the role local communities play in protecting coastal ecosystems, enjoy vibes of the coastal village.

If conditions allow, participants may witness hatchlings emerging from their natural nests and crawling toward the ocean—one of nature's most inspiring and unforgettable moments. Educational sessions, community engagement activities, and opportunities to meet local conservation volunteers will also be part of the program.

World Sea Turtle Day is more than a celebration; it is a call to action. Every piece of trash removed from the beach, every nest protected, and every person inspired to care for the ocean contributes to a better future for sea turtles.

Join us at Mawil Sea Turtle Sanctuary on 14-15 June 2026 and become part of a growing movement to protect our oceans. Together, we can ensure that future generations will continue to witness sea turtles nesting freely on the shores of Mawil Beach. Click Register!to register your participation!
